| There is nothing
fixed in Dule’s paintings other than a commitment to working out the dialectic
between the real and the imaginary and the continuous movement of interwoven
painterly gestures and marks. The diverse permutations within his abstractions
suggest that the artist approaches the sense of classical perfection through
a critique: his gestural aesthetic evolves into a highly personal style
that rings true to our times.
More often that not the artist will exploit the visually rhetorical force of highlighting the gaps or voids that are assiduously maintained as conspicuous fissures between the washed surfaces. The end-results are precariously balanced compositions whose freewheeling parts vie for attention from the beholder. There is a conversation between parts that take place in the artist’s works that animate the visual experience for the viewer. It includes ruminations and speculations about the forces between completion and deferral, between order and disorder, between centering and dissolution. The delicate compositional
balance that pervades each piece suggest, then, a momentary state of quiet
and stillness within flux. What becomes abundantly clear in Dule’s work
is the artist’s indispensable capacity to attain a certain emotional detachment.
This distance, evidently a hard-won professional stance acquired after
years of development, has allowed him to involve the viewer in those humanistic
issues which have a bearing on his work.
