Waves in Black and White 2011

“Waves In Black and White”, 2011 is an ongoing series of seascapes photographed at the shore of the Atlantic Ocean in Rockaway Beach, Queens, New York.

I began photographing the seashore in 1996 with the series, “Seascapes 1996 thru 2006”, followed by “Winter” and “Summer”, 2009. Color has always been an integral part of my images, creating a minimal interpretation of the vast sea and sky before us, and printing in large sizes to achieve full impact.

A study in black and white allows the viewer to explore the most basic elements of composition; contrasting light, texture and form.  It transforms an image into something more conceptual than realistic, deconstructing a scene and reducing it to its forms and tones.  By subtracting color, the viewer is compelled to add his own emotion to the image.

All series were photographed from the very same location at the shoreline during all seasons and time of day, exposing the depth and richness of the ever-changing beauty of the sea.
